This classic story of Peter and the Wolf begins with a twist involving the Russian writer himself. In this new for BCT adaptation, we meet Sergei Prokofiev and Natalya Satz as they are in the middle of creating a “symphonic fairy tale for children”. We watch and listen as they begin to match instruments in the orchestra with possible characters for a story. The flute sounds like a bird; the oboe like a duck quacking. The clarinet is smooth and aloof like a cat. The instruments define the characters and from those characters a story is discovered........From Prokofiev's creative mind and his childhood memories of the Ukraine, we see Peter, his grandfather, and his friends: the bird, the duck, and the cat all coming to life on stage. When a menacing wolf traps Peter and his animal friends, he tests his courage and cleverness to outsmart the beast. All ends well in this magical production that combines the Orchestra, Russian history, dance and theatre to capture the essence of Prokofiev's classic; the triumph of taking risks and trusting the limitless potential of the imagination.
