Sensory Friendly Performances

Birmingham Children’s Theatre is proud to offer sensory-friendly performances for children and adults with autism spectrum disorder, sensory sensitivities or other special needs. These performances are designed to provide an arts experience that is engaging, enjoyable, and accessible for all of our audiences.


Sensory Friendly Performances

Birmingham Children’s Theatre is proud to offer sensory-friendly performances for children and adults with autism spectrum disorder, sensory sensitivities or other special needs. These performances are designed to provide an arts experience that is engaging, enjoyable, and accessible for all of our audiences.

Accommodations for these performances include:

  • Lower sound level, especially for startling or loud sounds;

  • Lights remain on at a low level in the theater during the performance;

  • A reduction of strobe lighting or lighting focused on the audience;

  • Patrons are free to talk and leave their seats during the performance;

  • Designated quiet areas within the theater;

  • Space throughout the theater for standing and movement;

  • Families will also have access to resource materials to prepare for their visit.

Follow young Peter and his friends as they explore the world around them. From learning how to whistle to thrilling encounters with treasure, the delightful moments of childhood are perfectly captured in this imaginative musical play.

Her disbelieving classmates tease her mercilessly until one day, Wanda’s desk sits empty. A musical based on the beloved Newbery Honor Book by Eleanor Estes, The Hundred Dresses is a powerful and timeless story about bullying, friendship, and forgiveness.

Music, mischief, and missing mittens! Audiences are invited to join Katie Sue, Purr, Tuffy, and Whiskers on their search for the lost items, and discover that any problem can be solved with a little bit of thinking.

The farm gang is all here: Wilbur, the young pig with a zest for life; Fern, his first friend and savior; Templeton, the gluttonous rat; the Zuckermans; the Arables; and the extraordinary spider, Charlotte. When “Some Pig” mysteriously appears written in the web, Wilbur is given a second chance at life and a taste of fame. Based on the popular novel by E.B. White, Charlotte’s Web is a classic tale that shows us friends come in all shapes and sizes.

Based on the Hans Christian Andersen classic, BCT’s new adaptation by critically-acclaimed playwright Lucinda McDermott is infused with Spanish language learning opportunities. Follow the adventures of Thumbelita: a tiny person in a giant world reminding us all that good things truly do come in small packages!
